Drug Charges
All drug charges are serious, but some are more severe than others. Unsurprisingly, the law will be much more lenient on someone charged with possession of an ounce of marijuana than it will be on someone who has been running a meth lab out of his garage. It is important to understand the law as it relates to illegal drugs and know how to respond to drug charges.
Misdemeanor Drug Charges
Not all drugs are created equal, and under the law, not all drug charges are severe enough to be considered felonies. Drug charges that are generally misdemeanors include:
- Possession of less than two ounces of marijuana
- Drug paraphernalia possession (bongs, pipes, etc.)
Misdemeanors, though less severe than felonies, are still no light matter. Although first offenses rarely carry jail time, you could find yourself with hefty fines, probation, and a ruined reputation.
Felony Drug Charges
Unlike minor marijuana possession, possession of meth, ecstasy, and cocaine are felony-level charges. Like any criminal charge, the severity of the punishment is dependent on the severity of the crime. If you have been arrested with less than one gram of cocaine or meth, the maximum sentence is two years in jail and a fine of $10,000. In addition, possessing as little as four ounces of marijuana is considered a felony. Felony drug charges are very serious, and can affect your ability to get a job or pursue higher education.
