Police Misconduct and Brutality
If you have ever had any contact with the police, you are likely not to forget it. While most police officers are honest and work within the law that they are bound, there are some who chose to go outside that law. What most people do not realize is that police misconduct and brutality is not just physical violence, but a whole host of other things.
For example police misconduct and brutality includes the following:
- Unwanted or illegal surveillance: If police install surveillance devices in your home or stake out in front of your house for no legal reason, then they are abusing the law.
- False Arrest: Arresting someone who has committed no crime or has no justification for being arrested is considered false arrest. Police officers might do this to get information about something, or force a false confession.
- Racial Profiling: Racial profiling is illegal and considered police misconduct. Because everyone is guaranteed due process under the law and equal protection, by singling people out, this is in direct violation with the fourth and fourteenth amendments of the constitution.
- Intimidation: By knowing your rights you can help prevent police from intimidating you into doing something you do not have to or saying something you do not mean.
