Texas Occupational Driver's License
Revoking or suspending a person’s driver’s license is a common punishment for drunk driving and other traffic violations. However, this penalty does create an undue burden for many people. Without a driver’s license, a person may be unable to go to work, take classes, or transport family members to the places they need to go.
If the court determines that the plaintiff has legitimate needs for a driver’s license, they may agree to issue an occupational driver’s license. This is a document that allows a person to continue driving in limited circumstances, even after his or her license is suspended or revoked. To learn more about its advantages and limitations, call the Denton criminal defense lawyers of Karen Alexander & Associates at 972-420-6560.
How an Occupational License can Help
With an occupational driver’s license, you can be granted permission from the court to continue using a non-commercial vehicle in the following ways:
- Traveling to and from work, or completing other work-related duties
- Traveling to and from school
- Completing necessary household chores
It is important to note that an ODL does not give you permission to drive your car for recreational or other non-approved purposes. It also does not grant permission to drive a commercial vehicle, such as a large truck or delivery van.
Getting your ODL
To get an occupational driver’s license, you will need to petition your county or district court. If the court approves, they will issue an order for an ODL. The order itself can be used as a driver’s license for up to 30 days while the government processes the license. If you have any further questions, our experienced Denton occupational driver’s license attorneys can help.
