Texting While Driving
We live in a constantly changing world. Never before has technology been so dynamic, growing by leaps
and bounds in a matter of years. We use products every day which just a decade or two ago might have
seen like something out of science fiction. The cell phone is one of these products; in the late '80s,
it was enormous and clunky and the provenance of the hyper rich. Today, everyone owns one, and in many
ways, the technology has outpaced our ability to use it responsibly.
Text messaging has become one of the most popular features on mobile phones. In June of 2008, Americans
sent a truly staggering 75 billion text messages. Text messages have become a huge part of our culture,
and it's unlikely that they're going away any time soon.
The Dangers of Texting
Text messaging while driving is very dangerous. According to polls, about 50% of teenagers who engage
in texting while driving say that they find it very distracting. Studies have found that texting while
driving is not conducive to safe driving, with many studies, from the scientific to the casual, finding
that it is actually more dangerous than driving drunk.
According to a Virginia Tech study in 2009, 81% of automobile accidents are due to drivers being distracted
and not paying enough attention to the road. The same study found that text messaging while driving
was the single biggest distraction to drivers, and engaging in text messaging while driving made drivers
23 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
